Put phone chargers, public toilets and water fountains everywhere, for a start. But in terms of getting us through those stress crunch points in the day, there are so many little things that would help. ![]() Goodness knows what can be done about the big stuff while we wait for the human central nervous system to catch up with the 21st century, or for one of the smörgåsbord of potential catastrophes to return us to calm, pre-agrarian living. Women, people under 35 and on lower incomes suffered worse, unsurprisingly. We’re reporting higher levels of stress all the time: according to Ipsos research last year, 60% of participants across 34 countries report that they have felt stressed “to the point where they felt like they could not cope or deal with things at least once in the past year”. None of our fight-or-flight stuff is turning out to be particularly helpful for dealing with constant aggressive digital stimuli, the melting Antarctic, zoonotic bird flu, flesh-eating opioids, alien balloons et al. The thing is, we’re still evolutionarily maladapted to deal with the world in which we find ourselves. It’s a cruise ship buffet of cortisol and my life is laughably low-stress, so surely everyone feels like this? Maybe there wasn’t a tick box on the survey for: “It’s a constant roiling churn – please help.” After the 5.38am witching hour, I have multiple sweaty, chest-tightening peaks throughout the day. But it’s more that the real problem with stress is the relentless way it accumulates, like heavy metal in your blood the way it keeps coming back to deliver a top up. For one thing, that seems likely to be a transitory stress peak – the kind you get through by gritting your teeth (possibly trying not to crush the pipette delivering flower essences into your gullet as you do) and reminding yourself that later you’ll be able to snatch a few moments to quietly stare into space and regret your life choices. If you’re commuting, any number of exciting developments are likely to be poised to ruin your day and, if you’re Mark Wahlberg, you’re an hour and 23 minutes into your shower and have to start playing golf in seven minutes.īut I’m not convinced 7.23am is really the worst. ![]() Possibly a child will pull a dog-eared letter out of a book bag with the triumphant air of a conjurer with a rabbit, informing you they need to come in this morning dressed as Pope Pius VII and bring a scale model of the Sistine Chapel made of “widely recyclable materials only, please”. If you are a parent, you may also be upbraided for human rights violations in the fields of “breakfast”, “teeth” or “shoes”. Bad things tend to happen around then: verticality, showering and dressing for starters. The question arose because according to what I suppose we could call research (a survey commissioned by Rescue Remedy, the flower-based potion for modern malaises), 7.23am is the “most stressful” time of the day. That’s when I realise that, having been woken by the dog (erratic, ancient) sometime between 3am and 4am, none of my getting-back-to-sleep strategies are going to work and instead turn to catastrophising about the day ahead, reminding myself insomnia is probably worse than smoking, sitting down and snorting asbestos combined. I’ve been trying to work out what the most stressful moment of my day is and I think I’ve got it: 5.38am, or thereabouts. ![]()

A Pokémon with subpar stats (which was only somewhat powerful back in time of Pokémon Red and Blue before the Special split and due to the general overpoweredness of the Psychic type, and was outclassed even back then). In this mod, she can sing, but doing so makes her break on a metaphysical level and glitch apart by the end of the song, a far cry from simply not being able to muster out a move. DISABLED in the original creepypasta was simply a Wigglytuff who, thanks to circumstances implied to be abuse from her prior owner, couldn't use any moves. The image Purin is based on simply had black eyes dripping blood, a far cry from the hideous Body Horror it pulls off in this mod.In "Death Toll", its body is a faded dark purple, its face has red glowing eyes and large human teeth, and its arms are much longer and end in sets of claws. In Pokémon Lost Silver, the sprite of Gold's Celebi was simply cut in half with no gore.It gets worse in the cancelled build, with the second half of the song tearing his head off his body and leaving it under the possession of numerous Unowns. The mod takes this a step further by instead having his limbs being violently torn from his body (justifiable, as this is quite a common depiction of Gold’s condition among fan works related to the original story), his eyes missing from their sockets entirely, and adding a giant visible heart and the ability to stretch his face beyond normal possibility. In Pokémon Lost Silver, Gold's sprite limits him to having his arms and legs neatly removed and Tears of Blood coming from his eyes, but otherwise he looked more or less the same as he did in life.Interestingly, a pair of teaser images posted to Banbud's twitter indicates that Hypno was once closer to its canon counterpart and changed into what it is now. Here, it's become a lot larger and its head is almost tearing itself from its neck in half of its animations, and the form it takes in "Left Unchecked" is rife with Body Horror, featuring its levitating head ripped off of its body and Phlegmings made from its own flesh. Hypno in the original Pokémon games wasn't too scary to look at - a little creepy at worst - and its powers were limited to basic Psychic Powers and hypnosis.Of course, it wouldn't be nearly as good of a song if one half was just silent. DISABLED is completely unable to use Sing, but while she does miss all of her notes to reference this, she still has vocals for the song.Neither of Gold's or Missingno's Hell mode additions really make sense (Hypno's Hypno Pendulum appears in Monochrome without a source, and Missingno was removed when Unown was introduced), but they still make their levels harder than ever. ![]() ![]() Even in Hell difficulty, Hypno's pendulum doesn't work that quickly, as to be a bit more lenient on the player.

On that score it’s a visually pleasing, eminently watchable slice of enchanted product - with a plot that’s both mildly touching and slightly strange. Since so many of the watchers of Disney cartoons are young children, “Wish” can be experienced, on its own “innocent” terms, as if one had never heard of Disney or seen its movies. Does that make it a summation or a pastiche? A movie marbled with pop history or overstuffed with Easter eggs? One that launches the next Disney century or is stuck in the last one? Maybe all of the above. But “Wish” self-consciously packs 85 years of animated magic into a portable Disney fable. The studio’s cartoons have always borrowed bits and pieces from each other (all those princesses, all those talking animals and singing kitchenware, and what is Simba losing his father in “The Lion King” but the death of Bambi’s mother redux?). ![]() What this means, I think, is that Disney, in the midst of commemorating its 100th anniversary, has become a company so focused on itself that it has now produced a kind of fairy-tale signifier of its own brand. ![]() So what does it mean that “Wish,” the studio’s lavish new animated musical, while it doesn’t exactly showcase “When You Wish Upon a Star,” is a kind of literal-minded theme-park-ready illustration of it? Disney made it the company theme song in the ’50s, and since the early ’80s it has been featured in the studio’s motion-picture logo. It was first heard, of course, in the 1940 Walt Disney animated classic “Pinocchio,” where it was sung by Jiminy Cricket. ![]() “When You Wish Upon a Star” is one of those songs, like “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” that’s bigger than a song. ![]() ![]() ![]() Spice up the fun with customized stickers and effects!
